Continuing on the "mastubation ethics" diary theme started by another user (not me): I downloaded one of the infamous "Libby Hoeler" videos recently, ignorant as to the backstory. Now feeling guilty. (yeah, yeah, I know, that's probably nothing compared to how the poor girl felt when she found out!)
Apparently, in a nutshell: these very hot porn vids were produced for her boyfriend's eyes only. But "somehow" they "leaked out" onto Morpheus/Kazaa and onto the web. Read below for a sample of theories as to what happened. And a poll on the ethics of watching this kind of "unintended" porn.

What really made me mad was the way she kept pointing to the camera everytime the word "you" came up in the song lyics. (eg. "i love YOU", "... for YOU", etc). She ended each clip by blowing a kiss at the camera. Her jerk of a boyfriend sure didn't deserve her. He apparently received a 12 month jail sentence, mild consolation for Libby who probably had her life ruined.
That's the dominant story in my crude search engine investigations. Another theory was that her bf's roommate found and released the clips.
I probably should have stopped watching as soon as i realized what the clip was and who it was meant for and you're probably wondering why I didn't. I did say earlier in this post that the video was amazing and indeed it was. I do not exaggerate.
On a slightly more positive note though, a different take from another page:
as a first hand source i just wanted to let you know that libby's boyfriend did not receive any kind of jail sentence. he also did not put her name and address on the videos. that happened later after they had been circulating for a few weeks.

i know libby hoeller's ex-boyfriend... videos got uploaded accidentally... were in his download folder, and people uploaded it over Scour back in the day... he did not get a 12 month prison sentance... he is alive and well, attending university of indiana, highly amused by it... they broke up but maintained a sex relationship for seven more months...

No word on how "Libby" (if that is her real name) feels about the whole thing though. :(
I'm not sure whether to believe Mr. Duke of fuckedcompany.com - but if he's right, it sounds like she wasn't too shattered by the experience if she continued having sex with the guy. Which is a relief, I suppose.
[As an aside: when I was in my first year at university, there was one incident when the girls on my floor got pissed off with a couple of the boys (not me) who were staring out the first-floor window, blatantly staring up the skirt of a girl lying on the grass outside and laughing about it. I didn't see what all the fuss was about, but the girls on our floor were really annoyed about it, especially when I said I couldn't see a major problem with it. They said "it's pervy - yes it's in public, but she doesn't know she's showing them", and "how would you like it if a girl was secretly staring at you in your underpants??" (This was a rather comical question since I really couldn't imagine that happening!)]

Sex is a private ritual and porn is public entertainment. But on the internet the distinction between the private and the public sphere disappears. Is this frightening, are we relieved to find that the porn we enjoy is only a play, nothing real, performed by nameless actors? Are we ashamed to watch real sex that is not made for our eyes?

she's real: a bunch of my friends were on a class trip with her to france her senior year of hs, she lived on one of their floors in a dorm at UW when all of this happened and by coincidence 3 of my friends I have leased the same apartment she lived in until aug 14 2004.
